Description
A general engineering contractors license (Class A) allows a contractor to perform work on fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, including the following divisions or subjects: irrigation, drainage, water power, water supply, flood control, inland waterways, harbors, docks and wharves, shipyards and ports, dams and hydroelectric projects, levees, river control and reclamation works, railroads, highways, streets and roads, tunnels, airports and airways, sewers and sewage disposal plants and systems, waste reduction plants, bridges, overpasses, underpasses and other similar works, pipelines and other systems for the transmission of petroleum and other liquid or gaseous substances, parks, playgrounds and other recreational works, refineries, chemical plants and similar industrial plants requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, powerhouses, power plants and other utility plants and installations, mines and metallurgical plants, land leveling and earthmoving projects, excavating, grading, trenching, paving and surfacing work and cement and concrete works in connection with the above mentioned fixed works.
How to obtain a
general engineering
contractors license?
Before you can apply for your general engineering contractors license, you must meet the following experience requirements:
- 4 years of experience performing/supervising A – general engineering work.
- Social Security number or ITIN
- Be at least 18 years old*
Don’t have 4 years of general engineering experience?
A college degree can be substituted for up to three years of that experience.
The State will accept self-employed experience.
In order to obtain your general engineering contractors license, you are required to pass the Trade examination as well as the Law & Business exam.
*Even though you can apply for a general engineering contractors license when you are 18 years old, it is recommended that you be at least 23 years old due to experience requirement.
